Frequently asked questions

Practical help for choosing a tool, understanding a result and making your next brew more repeatable.

Getting started

Are the brew lab guides actual test results?

No. The home brew lab contains six original experimental plans with example starting recipes, controls and unfilled record sheets. Creating A/B recipes saves only the plans in your local journal, without inventing brew results or deducting stock. Record actual measurements for each cup, then compare; repeated pairs are still not a formal statistical test.

Can I track a bag and troubleshoot a cup?

The bean library stores opening dates and measured stock and links to recipes. In the brew journal or guided-brew save form, choose a bag and confirm deduction to subtract the dry dose. Deleting a brew does not restore consumed beans. Taste troubleshooting uses a chosen record to suggest one experiment, not a certain diagnosis. All this stays local and is included in journal backups.

Can I follow a recipe step by step?

Guided brewing offers V60, Chemex, upright AeroPress and French press starting schedules. Adjust dose and ratio, follow cumulative water weights, and finish when your actual brew ends. Pause excludes paused time. Saving a finished brew to the local journal is optional; timer progress is not saved after reload.

Are the tools free? Do I need an account?

All 30 tools are free to use without an account. Start with a brewing calculator or browse espresso tools.

Which tool should I use first?

For a new recipe, use the coffee-to-water ratio calculator. For espresso, pair the brew ratio calculator with the shot timer. Change one variable at a time and record taste.

Can I use the tools on my phone or offline?

The tools work in a modern browser on phone, tablet or desktop. Once a tool page and its JavaScript modules load, its calculation runs locally. Opening another page still needs a connection unless your browser has cached it. BrewLab does not install an offline app or guarantee offline reloads.

Measurements and results

Does the water amount mean water poured in or coffee collected?

The ratio calculator reports input water. Grounds and filters retain liquid, so collected beverage is usually lower. Cups mode multiplies your cup-size allowance to estimate recipe water; it does not guarantee that volume in the server.

Should I measure water in grams or millilitres?

Use the unit shown beside each field. The basic ratio calculator approximates 1 ml of water as 1 g. Weighing water helps make recipes repeatable; temperature changes its density. The unit converter distinguishes US and Imperial fluid ounces and does not turn beverage volume into mass.

How do I enter TDS?

Enter 1.35 for a 1.35% reading, not 0.0135. With 18 g dry dose and 250 g beverage, 1.35 × 250 ÷ 18 gives 18.75% extraction yield. Use a coffee-calibrated refractometer and its sampling instructions. A water conductivity meter is not a substitute. See extraction yield.

Why is an input rejected or a previous result cleared?

Blank fields, unsupported ranges and incompatible combinations cannot produce a valid result. For example, adding water cannot increase coffee TDS. Correct the input and calculate again. Clearing the previous result prevents an old answer from being mistaken for a current one.

Why do small results differ from my hand calculation?

Displayed values are rounded. Keep full precision during intermediate steps and round at the end. Measurement error and model assumptions can matter more than the final decimal place.

Will scaling a recipe preserve its taste?

The batch scaling tool preserves ingredient proportions. It does not preserve bed depth, flow, temperature or extraction. Check brewer capacity and compare a small batch before changing grind or pouring.

Are freshness dates or water bands safety guarantees?

No. The freshness calendar uses disclosed planning offsets, not expiry predictions. The water guide compares GH and alkalinity with starting bands; it cannot certify drinking water or equipment compatibility. Follow product storage guidance and your brewer’s water requirements.

Timers and references

Why is there no timer sound?

Press Start to allow the page to request audio playback, and check browser and device sound settings. Audio may be blocked or delayed in background tabs or when the device sleeps. The visual completion message remains useful, but this page is not a safety alarm. Try the brew timer while the page stays active.

When should I start an espresso shot timer?

Choose and record a consistent convention, such as starting with the pump including pre-infusion. Compare time with dry dose, beverage yield and taste. A 30-second shot is not automatically better than a 35-second shot.

Can the grind chart give an exact grinder setting?

No. The grind reference uses approximate classes and illustrative sizes. Grinder numbers vary by model and calibration. Start with your manufacturer’s guide and compare one small adjustment at a time.

Is the cupping calculator an official SCA assessment?

No. The legacy cupping practice calculator is an independent simplified practice sheet. It is not an official current Coffee Value Assessment, professional grading decision or certification.

How do I keep a blind tasting blind?

The order generator assigns sample numbers to coded positions. Keep that mapping hidden from tasters yourself. Editing the count clears the old mapping; generate again for the new count. The tool does not save mappings or guarantee a different order on every draw.

Privacy and help

Can I save recipes and compare my brews?

Yes. My brew journal saves recipes and brew snapshots in this browser when you select Save. Record actual measurements and taste notes, then choose two different brews to compare. Recipe edits do not change earlier snapshots. Export a JSON backup before changing devices or clearing site data; importing merges records after confirmation. There is no cloud sync or recovery service.

Are calculator inputs uploaded or saved?

The calculator scripts process inputs on your device without uploading or saving them to an account. Your browser can independently restore form values. Loading pages and fonts still involves network requests; see the privacy policy for technical information and third-party processing.

Does the contact form send my message?

No. The contact page prepares an email draft locally. Copy it and send it yourself through your email service. Copying a draft does not mean BrewLab received it; clipboard retention depends on your device settings.

How can I report a wrong result or unclear example?

Use the contact-draft page. Include the tool name, input values and units, the result shown, the result you expected and your browser. Avoid passwords or unnecessary personal information. The terms explain the scope and limits of the service.
